Colin is an Auckland-based motion designer - Influenced by film, science, technology, nature, philosophy, minimalism and deep thinking.

Spending my formative years in rural Scotland I was mostly influenced by design literature which surrounded my environment growing up, most of which were based on post-modernism, architecture, minimalism and 20th century art and design.

After graduating from University in Glasgow with a BA Honours Degree in Fashion Marketing, I subsequently moved on to obtain an MA in Design from the University of Leeds before moving to London to finish my higher education by completing a post graduate diploma in Motion Design from The University of the Arts, London.

After a few years in-between working at Apple Inc and freelancing in London I decided to move on and out to Australia, where I worked as a designer for 5 years in Melbourne and Sydney concentrating mainly in motion design while keeping an interest in all realms of visual communication, design, future-thinking and beyond.

Now based in Auckland, my current vision is to work on design projects which are meaningful, progressive and exciting that could activate positive change in the world in whatever way shape or form.

Nice things people have said about me —

Colin has helped us out in our Studio a few times when we have required a great designer with digital expertise to jump in the hot seat and get the job done. I therefore had the opportunity to work with him closely on a few projects and he was excellent - quick, responsive, adaptive, flexible and had some great input and ideas. I’d recommend Colin to anyone whom he is looking to work with - he’s terrific.
— Kylie Green, Managing Director, MKTG Australia at Dentsu Aegis Network
Colin freelanced for us recently creating an amazing motion graphics piece for the launch of MKTG in record time. It was great to have him as part of our team. Truely professional and committed to creating excellent work. I highly recommend him as a freelance designer and hope we get the opportunity to work together again soon.
— Yvette Mahon, Senior Manager - Creative, RPS Group
I’ve worked with Colin several times and he is simply one of the best designers I have worked with. He is not only incredibly artistically talented and technically astute, but his ability to translate what you require into a final finished piece of content, quickly and with very few revisions stands him out from the rest.
— Jeff Arnold, Managing Director, GuardLab - Asia Pacific
We brought Colin in to create a motion video presentation to be used as a key sales tool for our biggest trade show in Las Vegas. He was well organised, able to respond quickly to a verbal brief, and created a great result in a very reasonable time frame. We wouldn’t hesitate to get him back in again.
— Sophie Swann, Director, Cygnett, (Mobile Technolgy Company) Melbourne
I was thrilled with the animated corporate video that Colin put together for us - as was the executive board. Colin followed the vision and brief we gave him and also built upon it with some exciting creative elements that really pulled together the project. We’ll certainly use him in future and would recommend him to others.
— Dr Kimberley Pearce, Producer, Cygnett (Mobile Tech Company) Melbourne
Colin is a committed individual and dedicated team player. passionate about his profession and works well under direction as well as taking initiative. it was a pleasure to work with him.
— Shane Walter, Creative Director, onedotzero, London
Colin has worked for me on a number of high profile projects. He is always 100% committed to the project and prepared to go the extra mile to ensure both myself and (more importantly) my clients are completely happy. He has good creative ideas and yet is not precious about them which makes for an ideal combination in a client focused industry
— Jan Lower, Creative Director, Elbow Productions Ltd, London
CJ combines two of the most important if not critical qualities we look for in any motions graphic designer 1) The ability to look at a brief and translate that into really original visual communication - very quickly and 2) The ability to work at speed under constant pressure in a rapidly changing environment without becoming fazed. He also applies a much deeper level of critical thinking to approaching his work which results in more original creative solutions and robust visual ideas which look greeat on screen
— Malachy Molloy, Creative Director, Malachy Molloy Associates, London
Colin has worked with us at Elbow as a freelance graphics designer over the last 2 years across a number of different projects. He always approaches each and every job with enthusiasm and positivity and will always go over and above the call of duty to meet deadlines if required. He’s someone who is always very committed to a project and takes pride in a thorough job well-done. Colin has a really good sense of what will and won’t work on the page and on the screen, and we’ve always been really delighted with his work.
— Louise Reed, Director, Elbow Productions Ltd, London
Colin is a delight to work with - humorous, open, direct, interested, committed, creative, alive. He applies himself to everything and has a huge amount of integrity, and very high production values, which means that he doesn’t finish anything until he’s satisfied with it. His work for Elbow Productions has been classy, elegant and original. We love working with him.
— Susannah Elliott, Visitor Experience Consultant at National Trust, Suffolk, England
